RE: Recent Events in Ghardaia
Your Excellencies,
It is with great sorrow that we, the Algerian M’Zab community and descendants of the region of Ghardaia living in the United States, are addressing this open letter to you, the Algerian Government and the Law Enforcement Communities. We are deeply saddened and disturbed with the recent events that shook our region to the core, which resulted in loss of lives, property, and most of all peace and confidence in the Local and National Law Enforcement Authorities and Administration.
Our beloved Region of Ghardaia “M’ZAB VALLEY” is an integral piece of our beloved Algeria encompassing a dynamic civilized society with its roots embedded in our history. Its communities have lived in harmony for centuries and take great pride in their heritage. Seeing the amount of destruction and lack of peace that touched this region in recent months leaves us with no choice but to voice our concerns to our government in hopes that our humble input will aid in putting an end to these events. We appreciate the efforts of the Algerian Government and the Law Enforcement Communities to stabilize the situation, including through the deployment of the Gendarmrie Nationale. Furthermore, we appeal to you to find a long-term solution to the root causes of this unrest, to prevent such horrible events from ever taking place again in our region and the rest of our country.
So that the communities of Ghardaia may again live in harmony, we suggest the following actions to our Government Nationally and Locally:
– Swiftly apply civil and criminal law against any perpetrators, criminals, and terrorists who commit a crime against individuals as well as private and public property.
– Implement regular rotation of police personnel and strengthen mechanisms for community engagement to re-build the local police’s ability of to combat criminality and maintain balanced, constructive relationships with the local community.
– Promote sustainable economic growth that respects traditional communities.
In conclusion, we thank our government, the leadership of our society, and all parties working hard to put an end to these tragic events. We pray for the return of peace and harmony in our region, and for the prosperity of our beloved Algeria.
God Bless you,
Delegation of the Algerian M’Zab Community, Ghardaia Region, in the United States of America

que Dieu nous bénisse et bénisse notre Algérie, et que la justice de Dieu règne dans notre pays.
